THE LOCAL AREA
Our land is in Dunach which nestles at the foot of Mount Glasgow between the small towns of Clunes and Talbot. It
is 30km Northwest of Ballarat and 20km to Maryborough.
CLUNES was the site of the first official gold discovery in Victoria, made by James Esmoud on 1st July 1851 and is
recored the first "Gold Town" in the state. Many of the impressive buildings of the period remain and make the town a
fascinating place to visit. The wide main street retains a bit of a wild-west feel. Clunes is an active town
and has recently started an annual book festival in May.
TALBOT was also founded due to the gold diggings in the local area and after Victoria's first unofficial gold
was discovered there in 1848. Today it is a resurgent town with an increasing tourism industry. There are
several nice cafes while the popular Farmers Market (held on 3rd Sunday each month) has well over 100 stalls
and attracts several thousand visitors. The Talbot Astronomical Observatory is open all year and located in the
centre of town.
